A traumatic incident can be anything that is out of the ordinary range of daily events and is deeply distressing to someone. Many things can have this impact. It could be fire, an accident, a robbery or burglary, an attack, being a witness to a traumatic event such as a death. It can be large scale such as a major disaster involving many people or a personal event involving yourself, friends or family members.

It is perfectly normal to have a psychological reaction to traumas. These tend to reduce in the weeks and months after the accident. Itís a good idea to trust your own sense of the best way of dealing with the trauma. For example, some people find it most helpful to try and forget about the trauma and just get on with life, while other people find it helpful to talk about their feelings to someone.
